STEM Summer Camp Program Outline

 Overview and Purpose

Gravity K's STEM summer camp program is designed to serve children aged 5-12 from low-income housing communities in Orange and Polk counties. With a focus on at-risk youth, this program aims to ignite curiosity and encourage long-term interest in math, science, engineering, and technology fields, ultimately inspiring children to consider future careers in these areas.

 Target Demographics

Gravity K is committed to inclusivity, ensuring that children who have been underserved or excluded from similar educational opportunities have access to quality STEM learning. The camp will prioritize children from low-income backgrounds and diverse populations, providing them with a safe, engaging learning environment that fosters a passion for discovery.

 Program Structure

  • Age Groups: Activities are tailored to two age groups—ages 5-7 and 8-10.
  • Duration: A month-long, immersive summer camp with sessions held weekdays, incorporating hands-on activities, experiments, and creative challenges.Curriculum and Lesson Plan

The curriculum covers fundamental STEM concepts, including:

  • Week 1: Introduction to Gravity and Forces – Engaging activities on how gravity works with fun, hands-on experiments.
  • Week 2: Science and the Environment – Exploring ecosystems, recycling, and environmental impact.
  • Week 3: Engineering Basics – Introduction to building simple machines using household items and understanding basic physics.
  • Week 4: Creative Coding and Robotics – Age-appropriate coding lessons and simple robotics, allowing students to see the technology in action.

 Evaluation and Accountability

Each student will complete a survey at the start and end of the program, allowing Gravity K to assess growth in interest and knowledge. Additionally, Gravity K will partner with local colleges to offer internship opportunities for undergraduate students studying in STEM and education, giving them hands-on experience in program delivery and mentoring.

Owner’s Background

The camp’s founder, Kim Joe Vierra, brings over 26 years of educational experience. With a background as a kindergarten and summer camp teacher in video media production, Kim is deeply committed to childhood education, especially for underserved communities.
